Community Aquaponics

Harvesting fresh produce is an interactive way to interest and educate your community on food security.

Harvesting fresh produce is an interactive way to interest and educate your community on food security.

Food security is an increasingly common topic among non-profit organizations, clubs, municipalities, and community centres. This interest in local food sources is an excellent opportunity to implement aquaponics technology, create interactive educational programs, and produce healthy local food. As per our design ethos (see Consulting and Services main page), each system is tailored to your needs, constructed with locally-available materials, and treated with professionalism and dedication throughout the process.

As part of our adaptive project management approach, we also offer grant writing and strategic planning services in an effort to initiate successful collaborative projects and take advantage of local funding opportunities. From idea creation to potluck planning, WaterFarmers is the ideal partner in your community-based aquaponic initiative.

If you’re thinking about installing a system, review the tips below and scroll down for more information on the specific services available.

Waterfarmers engineers will be on-site to direct and supervise the construction process.

  • Construction – Work Plan Development
  • Site Preparation Supervision
  • Construction Supervision
  • Plumbing and Electrical Supervision

SYSTEM CONDITIONING

The most complex part of initiating any aquaponic system, known as “cycling” or “conditioning”, determines the health of a young system and sets the course for a flourishing future. WaterFarmers engineers have, through experimental research and development, created an effective technique to reliably condition new systems. Our approach ensures an accelerated growth from young system to full-fledged production.

  • Bacterial Culture Initiation
  • Nutrient Cycling
  • Water Quality Management

BIOME PREPARATION

The Biome represents the lifeline of any aquaponic system providing the ecozone for the various micro and macro habitats that facilitate an aquaponic ecosystem.

  • Organic Seed Starting
  • Fish Species Selection
  • Seedling Transplant
  • Biome Population
  • Fish Acclimatization
  • Hatchery Facilitation

SYSTEM COMMISSIONING

We implement a special step-by-step program for planning and maintaining the balance of nutrients by keeping the fish and plant population in sync through the cycles of seeding and harvest. For this purpose it becomes essential for all our prospective clients to understand the various steps involved in successful planning, implementation, managing and troubleshooting of a healthy aquaponic system. We offer a comprehensive on-site training as part of our services, for maintenance personnel and project owners. Remote support after commissioning is also made available to all projects as requested.

  • Maintenance Personnel Training
  • Seed & Harvest Planning
  • Plant & Fish Nutrition
  • Fruiting and Pollination
